One of the oldest known breeds of pigs, Berkshire swine were first transported to the United States in the early 1800s. Brought to the new world as breeders, the hope was that their superior genetics would improve those of the native pigs and the hogs brought over in earlier trips. Thanks to extreme overbreeding, within 75 years, the Berkshire hogs had been mixed and crossed to the point that all the full-blooded hogs were almost lost. To combat the demise of this special breed, the American Berkshire Association was founded to maintain the bloodline of the Berkshire breed, and has successfully done so for the past 300 years! The first boar registered to the association was a mighty hog by the name of Ace of Spades and was bred by Queen Victoria herself. Today our Berkshire pork offerings are descendants of these original hogs. Thanks to increased interest and a general demand for more of these heritage breeds, farmers are raising more of these amazing pigs than ever before! Browse through our selection of Berkshire pork today and taste the difference sustainable time-tested methods can make on the caliber of our foods!
